Hi there. You probably think you’re all grown up and your parents are just being mean or don’t understand you. Let me tell you something you might not know (or believe). Your brain hasn’t grown up yet! That’s right. It takes a long time for the frontal cortex of our brains to mature enough to make informed, wise decisions using critical thinking skills. When does it mature? Make a few guesses. 16?, 18?, 20? Nope. Not until about age 25! Yes, that’s right 25. In the meantime, emotions get in the way of decision making. That is why it’s important to listen to our parents and other responsible adults. If someone you don’t know approaches you, either in-person or online, in a way that may not make sense, or makes you somewhat uncomfortable, tell your parents or guardians. Believe it or not, they do love you and want you safe. Listen to their advice and try to have open communication with them. The more you communicate, the more likely you are to not be drawn into a situation you don’t want to be in.
